Gladiator X-Comp Off-Road Tire Trim Level Discussion and Features

If you know who Blake Wilkey from Shreddy Life is, or ever watched a YouTube video of a Volkswagen PreRunner-style Baja Bug whipping through San Diego, then you already know of him without even knowing it. We bring up Wilkey because he almost exclusively runs Gladiator X-Comp tires - as we started looking into the Gladiator brand of tires, we ended up finding out some pretty interesting information about them.

Gladiator has plenty of high-quality tires out there that can fit just about any type of vehicle, whether you're building a top-tier off-roader or just fitting new tires on your trailer. The X-Comp is Gladiator's best line of off-road tires, and includes trims like the Mud-Terrain, All-Terrain, and XT (Extreme Terrain), the latter of which is a crossover between all-terrain and mud-terrain tire types. Today, we want to show you everything the Gladiator X-Comp tire lineup can do, and why you should grab a set for your rig. Let's see what we've got!

Quick Overview of Gladiator Tires

There are quite a few things that have stood out to us with Gladiator tires that we really like, and the obvious one is that they make one hell of a tough tire. They can go through a ton of abuse and still hold up well, which is extremely impressive, but we also like the fact that Gladiator is an independent tire company that began on the foundation and principles of putting performance first by reverse engineering their tires.

What do we mean by reverse engineering? Well, it's pretty simple. In our market, off-road tire manufacturers like Gladiator start in the dirt first, instead of an office with a 3D simulator, to design their tires. Gladiator is in off-roading communities across the globe, finding out what all of us wanna see out of our tires - they then collect that data and go to work building that tire. Once the prototypes are built out, they head back out to the field for rigorous testing and repeat that process until they have a tire that's gonna do what it's supposed to, and hold up to a beating on top of that.

This isn't to say that Gladiator is the only tire company that does this, as Kenda, Mickey Thompson, and a handful of others do as well. But it means that you have another choice in the grand scheme of things that might not cost as much, and of course, the warranty that Gladiator tires bring to the table is pretty solid as well - more on that later. First, though, let's run through each X-Comp tire trim and see what they can do in terms of performance capabilities.

Performance Specs of the Gladiator X-Comp M/T

We're beginning with Gladiator's most extreme and noticeable tire - the X-Comp M/T. This thing is just a brute when it comes to needing a super durable and aggressive tire for your off-road rig, or even if you just want a tire that looks like it's gonna kick someone's ass as you're driving by them.

The M/T is a big-headed, big lug, blocky tire, but we'd caution you to keep all your expectations high for off-roading performance, just not so much for on-road comfort. We're not saying that it's horrible for on-road applications, but it is a mud-terrain, and mud-terrains have a reputation for being a bit noisy on the road, and they're not gonna do so well when the roads are covered with snow, ice, or even rain.

Performance Specs of the Gladiator X-Comp A/T

If you're looking for a great tire for your daily commuter that is gonna give you a quiet and comfortable ride, then the X-Comp All-Terrain will be the go-to tire there, especially if you're not using your vehicle all that often to hit up the trails. We don't say it that way because these all-terrains don't perform well in the dirt - in fact, they actually have quite a lot of off-road traction, but if you're hitting the trails quite often with your vehicle, then the X-Comp Hybrid is gonna be a much better option.

The X-Comp All-Terrain also does have a 50,000-mile warranty and a 55,000-mile warranty for passenger tire sizes, and it's rated for severe winter driving conditions as it comes complete with a three-peak mountain snowflake certification. This means that the X-Comp AT is a great tire for those of you north of the snow belt, or really anywhere, who are looking for a tire that can handle just about any type of on-road or off-road conditions and still want a tire that rides smooth and quiet on the road.

Performance Specs of the Gladiator X-Comp Hybrid

The tire that we're most interested in is the newest tire in the X-Comp lineup, that being the XT model. Personally, we would've loved to see it designed so it would've been tested and rated for severe driving conditions, but regardless, this is still a high performer in just about any situation that you put it through.

With that said, though, it's tame enough on the road that it's not gonna seem like it's as aggressive as it looks. That's because it has a more tightly grouped center-tread pattern, and the shoulder rags don't have huge voids between them, because your center tread and shoulder blocks will be the ones having the most contact with the road.

This tire is still gonna be fairly well-behaved on the pavement, but once you get it off, it's gonna utilize those large lateral voids that are in between the shoulder rags and center tread blocks while offering maximum capabilities when evacuating loose dirt, mud, sand, snow, and anything else you'll come in contact with. The tread depth, depending on the size of the tire you go with, does vary from 16/32" to 18/32", still giving you pretty deep treads to help in giving you great bite and traction through the loose top.
