1992-1999 GMC Yukon Wheel, Tire & Suspension Fitment Guide
Debuted in 1992, the Yukon was GMC’s first entry into the full-size SUV market, similarly based on GM’s GMT400 platform. The Yukon was meant to serve as GMC’s counterpart to the Chevy Blazer, which later became the Tahoe in 1995. The Yukon was designed as a rugged, truck-based SUV that had strong off-road capabilities, a powerful V8 engine, and a focus on overall utility. The first-gen GMC Yukon’s rear-wheel or four-wheel drive options handled both highways and rugged trails with ease, which quickly made it a favorite of off-road enthusiasts.
If you own a first generation GMC Yukon and you’re looking at turning it into your next off-road rig, but you aren’t sure where to start, then you’ve come to the right place. This Fitment Guide will contain critical information you’ll need to start the journey to transform your Yukon from highway cruiser to terrain-tackler and everything in between. We’ll talk about the right tire and wheel sizes you’ll want, as well as show examples from our gallery of what other Yukon owners put on their builds for inspiration. Ready to get started? We are too, so let’s go!
Stock Wheel & Tire Fitment for the First Generation GMC Yukon
Coming off the production line, the GMC Yukon had available tire and wheel sizes in a few different options. For tires the sizing was either a 235/75 or a 245/75, while wheel sizes were either 15x7 or 16x7. The original Yukon featured a Bolt Pattern of 6.5x5, which is important to remember when you’re choosing wheels for your off-roader. You’ll want to make sure any wheel you’re looking at fits that bolt pattern, otherwise in order to get the correct fit you’ll need to make sure you have an adapter.
When you’re looking to equip your Yukon for maximum off-road performance, the formula is fairly simple. Larger tires plus smaller wheels equals the best results. If you look at the Yukons in our gallery, you see a lot of them are rocking wheel sizes from anywhere between 15-18 inches in diameter combined with wheels that are 33-35 inches in height. Then you take that and pair it with a suspension lift around 3-5 inches tall, and you get maximum ground clearance while protecting your undervehicle components from damage. Speaking of ground clearance, one thing you’ll want to keep in mind with a taller lift kit is your suspension’s geometry. You’ll want to make sure that it’s properly aligned before going out on the trials. If it’s out of whack, you can end up causing massive damage to your rig’s suspension.
