Ford & Google Bring TransAmerica Trail to Google Street View

Ford and Google have joined forces to map out one monster trail for off-roaders. Recently, Ford and Google announced that the TransAmerica Trail, the longest off-road trail in the United States, is now mapped out in Google Street View.

Google Street View is an available feature in Google Maps, which allows drivers to explore roads and trails digitally with 360-degree photos to see what a given location looks like on every step of the path.

The TransAmerica Trail is a nearly 6,000-mile chain of trails that doesn’t feature any official signs and has paths that weave to and from other parts of the trail network. Off-Roaders love this trail because of its expansive size and the combination of paths available, but now, enthusiasts can travel safer, know where they are at all times, and find the quickest route out in case they lose direction.

Google equipped the Ford team with the tech to capture every angle of the trail, placing the necessary camera equipment on the top of a Ford Bronco Badlands. Spanning over 13 states, the crew started in coastal Oregon and ended the journey on the shores of North Carolina. Crossing mountain ranges, creeks, saltflats, and wooded terrains, the team finished their travels after 32 days of heavy off-roading. The team was able to capture enough data to map out and pinpoint the entirety of the trail system.
