GripMax MaxGrip: Four Treads, One Decision
GripMax entered the US in 2024 with the MaxGrip family, and it fills a gap most budget brands skip: a real tread ladder from all terrain to full mud terrain in the sizes lifted Jeeps and Toyotas run. Here is how we sort it for a rig that gets wheeled.
- MaxGrip A/T: the daily driver on a 2.5 to 3.5 inch lift. Quietest tread, best highway wear, enough void for gravel forest roads and packed snow. Pick this for a Tacoma or 4Runner that commutes five days and sees dirt on the sixth.
- MaxGrip R/T: mud-terrain shoulders and sidewall bite with an all-terrain center. The sweet spot for a JL Wrangler that runs rocky two-track and still needs to get home on pavement without a headache.
- MaxGrip X/T: the hybrid. Bigger blocks than the R/T, reinforced cut-resistant sidewalls, quieter than the M/T. Built for rock ledges and shale where sidewall damage ends the day.
- MaxGrip M/T: deep lugs, wide voids, self-cleaning. Mud, sand, and loose clay. Expect noise on the highway and plan on airing down.
Sizes that clear on a Jeep or Toyota
The common GripMax fitments in our gallery are 33x12.50R17 and 35x12.50R17 on Wranglers, and 285/70R17 and 35x12.50R18 on Tacomas and Broncos. A 35 on a JL needs at least 2.5 inches of lift and usually a fender trim or aftermarket flare at full articulation. A 33 on a stock-height Rubicon clears. Confirm your exact lift and wheel offset in the Year/Make/Model tool, then check the gallery for a rig at the same height.
Pair it with a wheel that wheels
GripMax runs well on Method, Fuel and KMC in 17x8.5 and 17x9 with an offset between 0 and negative 12 for a Wrangler. Build the wheel and tire package and it ships mounted and balanced. Financing through Katapult and Affirm is available at checkout.
GripMax Tires FAQ
Is the GripMax MaxGrip R/T a good tire?
For a rig that splits time between pavement and trail, yes. The R/T gives you mud-terrain traction on the shoulders where you need it in ruts and off-camber sections, with a center tread that stays quiet and wears evenly. It is a value tire, so it will not match a Toyo R/T on tread life, but it holds its own on the trail.
What is the difference between the GripMax X/T and the M/T?
The X/T keeps large tread blocks and reinforced sidewalls but tightens the pattern for a quieter highway ride and better wet traction. The M/T opens the voids up completely for mud and sand. If you rock crawl, take the X/T. If you mud, take the M/T.
Where are GripMax tires made?
GripMax is built by Qingdao Grip Tyre Co. in Qingdao, China, and sold in the US through GripMax Tires Inc. The brand has been around since 2014 and sells in Europe, Australia and North America.
Will 35x12.50R17 GripMax tires fit a JL Wrangler?
On a 2.5 inch lift with a 17x9 wheel at negative 12 offset, yes, with minor rubbing at full lock on the plastic liner. On a 3.5 inch lift they clear with room to flex. Check the Wrangler gallery for the exact combo.
Are GripMax tires 3PMSF rated for snow?
The MaxGrip A/T carries the three-peak mountain snowflake in most sizes. The R/T, X/T and M/T are M+S rated but not 3PMSF. If you wheel in winter, the A/T is the safer pick for icy pavement.
